2.5” dia. Gravity Conveyor with Pneumatic Pop Up Skatewheel for Cross Lane Transfer
Our customer faced the challenge of maneuvering 1,400 LB. automotive racks through a small footprint within their production area. Key requirements included accumulation of a small number of racks, and maintaining an ergonomic height for handling.
The metal racks, with narrow (2″) perimeter runners and a limited footprint, presented a significant obstacle. Furthermore, the lift truck loading/unloading process further complicated the process. To address these challenges, we proposed a solution utilizing robust structural steel frames equipped with low-mounted 750 lb. capacity 2.5″ diameter rollers.
A crucial element of our design was a continuous cross-lane wheel transfer system. This system incorporated high-capacity, high-density roller rails (1,000 lbs./inch) mounted on a sophisticated wedge block lift mechanism. This mechanism ensures smooth, stable, and controlled movement during elevation and lowering, mitigating the risk of sudden drops in case of air pressure loss. To facilitate smooth rack transfer despite the limited contact area of the rack runners, we employed a high-density roller pattern.
Rack indexing and movement control were achieved through a combination of a low-profile pneumatic claw stop and a roller brake escapement system. This design minimized height interference while ensuring precise rack positioning.
Prior to on-site installation, we conducted thorough testing at our facility. This rigorous testing phase allowed us to:
- Determine the optimal pitch for the non-powered conveyor to ensure smooth product flow.
- Verify the functionality and performance of the cross-lane transfer mechanism.
- Complete the on-site installation efficiently over a single weekend.
